Adèle watched the door to the subway close between her and the platform where Marcel and Raymond still stood. As the train pulled off, she began to consider the task at hand. It would be no easy spell, cloaking the waiting room so that people would see it, but have no desire to enter. It would be easier to simply make the room invisible, to make the wall appear solid, but if she did that, people might notice the wizards and vampires disappearing through said solid wall. Non-magical folk might dismiss it as fatigue at four in the morning, but if any dark wizards were around, they would notice. She would have to make the more difficult spell work. She went over the layers of it in her head. She would have to cast it in several stages in order to suppress interest in the door and conceal the interior from prying eyes and spells.

She arrived at the train station and made her way up to the waiting room off the main tracks. The room was almost empty as she walked the perimeter, casting the first layer of the spell, a binding spell to which she could attach the other layers. When that was done, she took a seat, near one wall, across the room from the family that was waiting for their train, tapping her foot impatiently, looking at her watch, muttering under her breath. To anyone watching, she appeared just another impatient traveler. The words they could not hear, though, were the next layer to the spell, the one that made the door uninteresting to any who looked at it. Hopefully, it would work, and the family already in the room would leave soon.

While she was waiting, she looked around the room, trying to picture the space filled with her colleagues and with vampires. She could see, in her mind’s eye, the awkward moments as vampire approached wizard, asking for a taste of blood or as wizard approached vampire, offering a wrist. The image that came to mind reminded her of nothing more than of a junior high dance, with the teenage boys trying to ask their crushes for a dance and the girls trying to flirt with their chosen beau to get his attention. She had to stop herself from laughing out loud at the comparison.

The family finally left, allowing Adèle to add the more powerful spells. First, she cast a concealing spell, creating the illusion of drapes over the windows. An alarm spell went up next, to alert anyone in the room if the door was opened by any who might be considered foes. The last step was the most challenging. She had to modify the spells so that they would not affect vampires or Milice wizards, while still working on mortals and rebel wizards.

She looked around the room one last time, anticipation coursing through her. She knew many of her fellow wizards would react as Thierry and Raymond had, preferring to avoid the vampires and making the alliance only out of duty.
